Does being empathetic enhance our self-awareness?

There are a lot of things that make us feel human. I find that being able to connect with people on an emotional level is a profound experience that is layered not only with bliss but as well as a potential for self development. We can gauge ourselves and our characters based off the relationships we have with other human beings. I mean, I'm only as capable of loving someone else as much as I love myself. With all these relationships that we build, we are leaving a part of ourselves with others and taking a part of them with us in return. These lasting connections are built off shared emotions and intersubjectivity. Our capability as humans to be empathetic narrates the story of some interconnectedness.

Empathy arises from the development of a sense of understanding and relation to the thoughts and feelings that someone else confronts. We are prone to understanding things that we are familiar with. When we identify something we already have a personal understanding of, we are able to have a recollection of what it feels like and this prompts the ability to empathize. It takes a certain level of self awareness to be able to identify and relate to what somebody else is going through. You can only understand the feelings of others if you are in touch with your own. In this way, understanding yourself allows for the extension to understand other people as well. Empathy can be seen as a fundamental aspect of our consciousness or self-awareness, shaping how we relate to the world and others around us.

I am growing to be cognizant of emotions much like empathy, and its unifying effect. This is something I feel should be embraced as it paves the way for personal growth, enabling the cultivation of a deeper connection with oneself.
